Yogurt Maker Features
When choosing a new yogurt maker, you should look carefully and compare its features to others on the market – use my comparison chart above to help you then read some of my detailed reviews of the top makers. As a quick summary, here are the main features to look out for when you’re shopping:
The amount of yogurt that can be produced in a batch: most makers use a set of jars or containers, so the capacity is the number of jars that can fit in the maker multiplied by the size of each jar (eg 6 x jars, each with capacity of 6oz).
The reason makers often go for individual jars is that it’s more convenient to eat by the jar and it lets you prepare different flavors of yogurt at the same time.
Some makers use one single jar: these typically have a higher capacity/volume and so are ideal when you want to make one big batch rather than making multiple flavors in a single batch.
The produce yogurt, you need to heat the milk and other ingredients (normally to around 110 degree Fahrenheit) and then maintain this temperature – this allows the bacteria to start the fermentation process. If the heat isn’t applied carefully and consistently, the bateria will be killed off and fermentation won’t occur – result: no yogurt!
So one of the key features of a maker is its ability to heat and maintain a constant temperature. Some makers also include a cooling or chilling feature to produce frozen yogurt.
Maintaining a consistent temperature is really important when producing yogurt, so a reliable thermostat is an essential part of any maker.
Look for a maker with a built-in timer – this makes it much easier to set and forget the maker or run it overnight.
It normally takes between six and 12 hours to go from milk to yogurt – but it depends on the style of yogurt, ingredients and the maker itself
Greek Yogurt Maker
Some specialty makers produce Greek-style yogurt (take a look at the Euro Cuisine Greek Yogurt Maker review). To produce this type of yogurt, the maker needs to have a special, fine strainer.
